DIY Hostess Gift Idea
Today’s DIY hostess gift tutorial is so easy it is laughable. Why haven’t I ever made these potpourri bags before? It’s genius! Every year I do a hostess gift guide and it is always filled with things you can BUY for the hostess. Most people love that. It is nice and easy. This year I wanted to mix things up a little and do a fun DIY project that you could actually MAKE for your hostess.
Y’all… I fell in love. I may never actually buy anything for a hostess again, haha! These potpourri bags are just so fun and easy and smell so.dang.good. Kaylee and I had a great time making these together and both kept one for ourselves, haha!
How To:
We kind of just winged it honestly. There are tons of mulled potpourri ideas on Pinterest. Too many really. We couldn’t pick which one to go by so we just kind of made one up ourselves.
*All ingredients are linked below. I grabbed the cellophane bags from Hobby Lobby. Burlap bags would be equally as cute and charming, but they just didn’t have that option at Hobby Lobby and we needed to shoot the next day. I also picked up this pine-looking wire while I was there and knew it would be a perfect holiday touch for the cellophane. We found options for each at Amazon with free shipping for you (linked below)!
Next, we went up and down (and up and down and up and down) many, many aisles looking for the perfect ornaments. You want to customize it to the person you are giving the bag to. Make sure they aren’t easily breakable or super big. I picked up the truck for Kaylee for her new apartment, the dachshund for my parents, and the scripture quote ornament for my older sister. This is also something you can do on Amazon or another one of your favorite websites that you use to order ornaments from.
Then we thought about spices and fruits that would smell especially good mulled. We used a few of the recipes we saw on Pinterest and mixed them together to get the below ingredients. We found them all at Kroger.

Prep:
This is another thing we winged. We knew we were making three bags so we just grabbed three of each of the fruits, a jar of each of the spices, a few rosemary twigs, some ginger, and a bag of cranberries.
We then just started grabbing a little of each and started stuffing the bags!
You could probably do about half of what we did in each bag and be totally fine, or you can go all out like we did and have enough for them to simmer for a few days! It really just depends on how many you will be making over the holidays and what your budget looks like.
Once we had the bags full we used the pine wire to tie a bow and and then we wrapped the ornament around each to personalize the gift.
They were SO MUCH FUN to make and it took us a total of 5-10 minutes to make all three bags. I want to make these daily! I am hooked!
Like I said above, I am kind of addicted to these now. I want to make them for all of my neighbors (and probably will!) I will DEFINITELY be taking these bags with me to every house party this season and I am going to buy a few fun ornaments on hand for when I need something quickly.
These are very thoughtful hostess gifts. They will know you actually put time and energy into making these. The ornaments make them a little more personalized and it is something they can actually hang year after year.
I made one of these for myself and we simmered the potpourri for two days straight. My husband is in love! It smells like heaven! We made rather big bags so I used a big pot and filled it halfway and let it simmer on the stove all day long. TIP: keep adding water since simmering will cause a lot of the water to evaporate throughout the day.
