It’s finally starting to feel like fall here in Colorado and I can’t wait for all of the fun activities this new season will bring! We love exploring new areas and especially love going on hikes during the fall since the trees, leaves, and really everything outside is SO gorgeous. It’s one of my favorite things about living in CO! We already have some fun trips and hikes planned for fall, and I’ve been getting prepped for our chilly adventures now since I want to be all set when the time comes.

hiking layers from Backcountry

I’ve been on a lot of hikes during the fall season and the #1 thing I’ve taken away from all of my hiking is you have to (and I mean have to!) layer! Since fall temps can go from freezing to mildly warm, it’s important to wear things that can easily be taken off and thrown back on. Temperatures can drop at any time and your hiking destination can be a lot chillier than the start (especially if any lakes are in your path as the wind can hit the lake and drive temperatures down 20 degrees!). You also always need layers to prepare for inclement weather. You can get random rain, hail, snow and crazy winds at any time while in the mountains. Because of this, I’ve invested in so many different layering pieces over the years from lightweight long-sleeve shirts to cozy fleece jackets.

Since the weather is starting to feel crisp and fall is just around the corner, I’m sharing all of my favorite fall layering pieces for hiking from Backcountry! If you’ve never heard of Backcountry, it’s basically my go-to for all of my hiking and outdoor adventures. They have everything you need from apparel to outdoor gear and are bringing in so many good new arrivals for the fall season! I’m especially into all of their fleece pieces right now, since I typically grab a fleece jacket for hiking or even just for day to day around town. If you’re looking to check out some beautiful fall scenery, I’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of all of my favorite places in CO to visit and hike to optimal fall leaf peeping:

1.Snowmass/Aspen- We did this trip last fall and I could not get over how gorgeous it was. Make sure to get reservations to Maroon Bells while you are there for ultimate leaf peeping!

2.Crested Butte- Make sure to drive Kebler Pass. Nothing like it in the fall!

3.Telluride- Haven’t been yet, but I heard it is definitely one of the top places to visit in CO in the Fall. Planning on making the drive next year. Do the free gondola ride- best way to see the Fall colors.

4.Vail- Vails is super close to Denver and is actually stunning in the fall (in case you didn’t want to make the 3+ hour drive to the other places listed above. We are going to Vail this week!

5.Peak to Peak Byway- This is 60 miles long and starts in Boulder. This is also on our list.

6.Guanella Pass- The CLOSEST to Denver. This is where the Georgetown railroad will take you (which is super fun for the kids), or you can drive up it yourself.

Haven’t booked your trip yet? You still have time! The peak season starts later the further south you go in CO. Here’s a map to help you plan:
